3.5mm Audio Cable Splitter Problem/Traktor

I bought the following 3.5mm Two-into-one Mono splitter yesterday:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/products/mod...&moduleno=1166

I bought this to allow me to use Traktor DJ Studio 2, so that the right
channel will be sent to my headphones and the left channel will be sent to
my main speakers. I heard beforehand that this was a solution that would
allow me to avoid purchasing an expensive two-channel or surround-sound
sound card.

When I plugged the adapter in, and set up my software, it worked absolutely
fine *except* that for some reason my speakers are producing almost no bass.
The strange thing is that my headphones are producing bass no problem, but
my speakers sound terrible. When I swap the L/R cables round and reconfigure
my settings, again, my speakers produce no bass. Does anyone have any idea
what the problem is and how to fix it, or an alternative cheap solution to
my problem?

Re: 3.5mm Audio Cable Splitter Problem/Traktor

more from the 'Hooha school' of uk.rec.audio-ism:

Here's what I think you want to do:

you have a sereo sound card, and you want to send the left and right
channels to two different devices. I'm a bit confused when you say

> to avoid purchasing an expensive two-channel or surround-sound sound
> card.

Because I think it's at least ten years since anyone made a mono sound
card.

Anyway, if I'm right the problem is your adapter is taking a mono source
and duplicating it, rather than taking an already stereo source and
presenting it on seperate mono sockets.

This should help:

So how do you hear those instruments only played in the right channel
through your speakers?

Through both channels it sounds the same - bassless.

So the program you r using can switch to MONO?

Hmmmm.......

It just seems like all a waste of time..... when a
SoundBlaster Live Card is pretty cheap to not have to go through what you
too do.

If your lookign for the sort of solution most PC dj's use

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...d19wcm9kdWN0X2
92ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=43912

will more than suffice.
It's a creative labs soundcard 5.1 - meaning you'd have 6 channels
admittidly your only likely to use four but anyway. It'd cost about £27 with
postage i think

Err, you're using a mono connector into a stereo socket - the stereo
socket has three connections, the mono two, so you're connecting things
together that shouldn't be - like the outputs of amplifiers.

If you look in the same section of Maplin, they do the same sort of
adaptor, but for stereo. It comes in two types, one which gives two
stereo outputs, and one which gives left and right - which will be mono
type sockets.

Assuming you mean >2 channel...

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=48180

Under 4 quid...

Even the Creative one is under 30 quid in most places...
