adding stops between songs of a full concert

I have downloaded a Pink Floyd concert as one long MP3 and I was
hoping to put some sort of stops or breaks (I dont know what to call
them) between each song... so that I could just skip ahead to whatever
song I want to hear.

What software allows me to edit an MP3 like this?

I know you guys discuss music software in here so I thought I'd ask you.

and any shortcuts as to "how" would also be appreciated, thank you.

What you should be looking for is a "sound/wave editor" capable of opening
and saving MP3 files. There are a number of them available for Macs, PCs,
and Linux. When you find the one you like, use it wisely by trimming the
beginning and end of the songs fading in and out as required. Copy each song
to a new file and save them separately. Then use a CD burning program to
arrange the order of the songs and create your CD.

Good luck and enjoy!

Re: adding stops between songs of a full concert

Actually there's an easier way to do this if you have a copy of Nero 5
(unsure whether you can do it with earlier versions as I've never owned
any).

First off go to 'Compile a new CD' on the intro wizard, select 'Audio CD'
then 'Finish'.
You'll then be presented with an empty window on the left which represents
your future CD and the right hand window is your browser. Use your browser
to locate your 74 minute long mix (or Pink Floyd gig in this case) and drag
it over to the left hand window.

You then need to right click the MP3 or WAV file in the CD window then click
'Properties'. From there go to 'Indexes, Limits, Split'. It'll then draw an
audio wave diagram of the entire track. This can take a minute or so
depending on how quick your processor is.You may want to zoom in a few times
too as the wave has minutes marked on it for ease of use. You then simply go
through the whole wave (you can listen to the bit you're on by clicking
play) and once you've found where you want your next track to begin click on
'Split' and it will insert a marker (which you can move by clicking on it).
Once you're happy all the splits you've inserted then click OK. It will ask
you if you want to split your one track into twenty (or however many)
smaller tracks. Click 'Yes'.

Once it's split, highlight all the tracks and once again right click and
properties. You'll see that there is a box that says 'Pause'. Input '0' (as
in zero) then move to where it says seconds and change that to 'Frames'. You
may have to highlight the first track again and stick a gap of two or three
seconds on it, I'm not sure if that's just my CD burner or a universal
thing, either way it doesn't really matter.

Then just click on the 'Burn' icon and it will bring up the Wizard again.
You're better off closing the Wizard off at this point which will give you
the more detailed Burning options. Then just make sure you have
'Disc-At-Once' selected on the Write method and the Seamless Link box
checked. If you can be arsed you can also write the CD Text for each track
too which is nice if you've one of those Hi-Fi's that utilise it (make sure
you check the 'Write CD text on CD' box in the Audio CD option before
burning).

Also if you right click all the tracks and go to Properties then Filters you
can stick a normalise (I usually go for Maximum) on the whole mix so it
evens up the volume all the way.

I burn all my mixes to CD this way and it works a treat. No need to hold the
FF button down on your CD player to hear that track 50 minutes down the line
;o)

Hope this has been of some help !!!!
