Re: becoming a DJ

Martin,

First thing's first... Possibly the most important aspect about being a DJ
is your music collection. You need to determine what you like, or more
importantly, what you would like to WORK WITH. In building your music
collection, remember that you will need to gather stuff not only to satisfy
your taste but also to please a crowd. This is why you'll also need to make
an early determination of where you would like to perform (e.g. private
parties, weddings, radio stations, clubs, raves).

The technology is the next step and almost as important as your music
collection. Get to know as many tools and try not to fall in love with any
particular device. Turntables, CD players, computers, mixers, amps,
speakers, etc. are just your performance tools. You will want to develop
your skills and make sure your performance is as good as possible, no matter
what device(s) you decide to use.

Be serious about your (possible) new profession, but be sure to have fun
with it...

Good luck!

Re: becoming a DJ

OK first of all, thank you Carlos!

I want to start with not so big things, so I decided to perform on private
parties. And the music collection should be Hip-Hop. I still have some
tracks on my PC as mp3 and that is the next point: I looked for turntables
at eBay but they're too expensive, so I'd like to work with mp3s and the
Traktor DJ player. But I can understand if you say turntables are the best
tools for a DJ, but I have no money. On the other hand is a turntable better
for scratching... Well thank you again and plz write back what do you think
about that...

Re: becoming a DJ

Martin,

If Hip-Hop and scratching are what you're after, you'll definitely want to
get your hands on vinyl and turntables. Yes, the good turntables and mixers
are expensive but in most cases the quality makes it all worth it. It's an
investment and you will get a return on it in one way or another (e.g.
money, enjoyment, learning).

Traktor is a very cool DJ program, but you will be able to get a lot more
out of it once you have some experience with the real thing (i.e.
turntables). Also, not really a very good tool for scratching. That said, if
you already have the program by all means play with it. Read the
instructions and try to understand the concepts. You can certainly get a
grasp for things like BPM and beat matching with Traktor... Go for it!
