Yeah, have you seen the crazy stuff the counters in the Pioneer 1000's do?
They don't like R&B and come up with some amazing numbers. One of the few
bad things about the players.

most of bpm counters work on a very basic principle - level detecotr
and timer after a lowpass filter. of course they don't like r&b,
someone has yet to makle a bpm counter that works well for r&b,
drum'n'bass, breakbeat or any non-4-to-the-floor style.
the best bpm counter is still a pencil, notebook and a stopwatch

Lots of them. Some are built into mixers and CD Players and I think even
turntables. All of them mostly suck. But at least most of them have a
"tap" feature where you take over for the automatic counting.

I DJd for YEARS listening to the song with the Pitch at 0% and counting the
beats while watching my watch. The longer you count, the more accurate you
are. I recommend a minimum of 30 seconds of counting (multiply by two).

If you have a PDA running the Palm OS, there is a GREAT and FREE
application that I now use to BPM my tunes before I get to the gigs. It is
called "Intervals?". You can download it at www.palmgear.com (do a search
for that name and it will come up somewhere in the list).
