Citronic Predator - Can we fix it?!

Hi all,

Just been given a Citronic Predator mixer to look at, has anyone got any
ideas as to where I could find schematics and/or wiring diagrams for it?!

Citronic/Skytronic don't seem to like replying to E-Mails...

Unless anyone has any hints as to how to fix it? Channel 3 and 4 have
died!!...

You can hear them through the headphones with "Cue" selected and the levels
look good on the output meter for "Cue", but the output just has a VERY
VERY VERY small signal bleeding through on the left channel only...doesn't
even manage to light up the first green LED, don't matter where you stick
your gains and levels Channels 3 and 4 are DEAD.

Know anywhere that could help?

Cheers!

Bob

If you depress the punch button for channels 3 & 4, does the sound go
through to the output? If so it could be a faulty crossover.

Re: Citronic Predator - Can we fix it?!

Thanks for replying, Umm I just tried that to no avail!!
I should point out that I don't really know anything about mixers, but I've
got a fair idea of what all the knobs and buttons are all about now!!

Tried interchanging the kill switch PCB's too, but the fault stays the same,
also just noticed that the right side (ch3 & 4) kill switches thump out a
really nasty "POP!" when they are selected on too, but only on the Right
Stereo Channel...

Swopped the outputs from the input/output connection PCB ch1 & 2 to ch3 & 4,
by interchanging the cables to the main board, but it's still Ch3 & 4 that
are faulty.

Hmmmm, I could really do with the schematic right now!

Also I don't know what the original fault with this unit was, just that it
was thought to have been repaired, but then this problem occured..(Could
even have been put back with a simple connector in the wrong place for all I
know)....I've just picked up this mixer because the tech who usually does
all the repair work for a friend of mines company is suddenly no longer of
this earthly realm, and I was trying to help 'em out.

In passing try FAXING citronic in Melksham and ask for a schematic.

I don't have the number to hand but try www.plasa.org and get it from the
member directory.

From memory with those the pcb tracks break/sever/crack knocking out certain
channels. A quick poke around the op amps on the faulty chanels with a
meter checking for power (+/-) would be a starter for ten.

Re: Citronic Predator - Can we fix it?!

Hmmmmm yea I found Citronic very evasive by E-Mail, just handed me straight
over to a company called Apollo Light and Sound who now handle all of their
support for older items (apparently), they didn't even reply to my first
E-Mails.

By phone Citronic (who are now part of Skytronic, (some sort of buy out?),
as of December 2003 which is probably why this is all so difficult now!!),
would have provided me with a schematic and were very helpful, BUT couldn't
find them anywhere....They reckon the Citronic Engineer has gone, and is now
employed by Apollo Light and Sound.

After calling Apollo Light and Sound, they asked me to FAX or E-Mail them
any part requests.

They too ignored my first E-Mail requesting a Schematic, after another
E-Mail they replied that they do not give out schematics, I asked if I could
buy one and they ignored my E-Mails again...

After calling Apollo Light and Sound, they told me that the Citronic
Engineer didn't want to pass on any of his knowledge and wasn't prepared to
give out his little cache of schematics...BUT they were quite up for the
idea of me sending them the unit so as they could look at it and give me a
quote for fixing it.....yea righto!! Thanks but no Thanks!

Ho Hum...!!

I did it the hard way, by trial and error, and blindly swopping things about
and found a defective op-amp IC. IC13 for the record....
Philips NE4558N, that's obsolete, so I'll be sticking in an NE5532N and
seeing what happens, the board has a mixture of the two P/No.s on it anyway!

About 70p from Maplin/RS etc etc...probably cost me double that just in
phone calls trying to get the drawings!!

Thanks for taking the time to answer my plea any way guys!!!
Better customer support than the companies involved!

Cheers

Bob

Emailing most sound & light companies is fairly fruitless in my experience.
They tend to ignore them unless the subject line reads "Wanted 5,000 Units
please quote"

Citronic used to be first class in service. Good quality schematics etc.
Parts. Ive not had to deal with them for a number of years now so I find it
sad that they have gone down the ignore and sell out route.

Some are still very good - Gemini for one are first class as are NJD.

The worst to date are Abstract by phone, email or fax it's just a waste of
time which is very frustrating when you are trying to obtain programmed
roms and PIC's for older future scans (everything else you can pick up
elsewhere). Six months Ive been fighting to get two poxy pics from them.

In your case mixers are pretty much run of the mill and that problem will be
staring you in the face. You will kick yourself in the end. Nearly always a
raised or broken track on the pcb, poor conector contact or dry joint.
Seriously have a look at the IC's around the faulty stages, get the part
numbers off of them, google them for a pinout and look for + & - on them.
If this is in order try injecting a sound signal into the ic's input. You
don't need a flash signal gen to do this. A tip of a phono plug with music
on it will do (plug the other channel into any input for the earth/ground).
You will quickly isolate if the channel fader, input amp or output is at
fault doing this in a thoughtful way but I bet it will still come back to a
broken or damaged track.
