Converting cassettes/records to CD - question .....

Hey All,

Used to DJ about 10 years ago and I have a bunch of mixes on cassette that I
made and I would like to convert them to CD.

I have been using AudioCentral (from Roxio 6) and it seems to work simply
OK.

One problem I have come across is that if you apply any effects (equalizer
in my case) then the finished product has little 'pops' between tracks.
This is not good on a continuous mix!

Is there other software out there I should be looking at for this? Thanks

Adobe Audition (ex Cool Edit Pro) is among the best. It's not free, though.

Re: Converting cassettes/records to CD - question .....

The problem is undoubtedly due to the editor. Use CDWAVE to recut the tracks
to length.

My guess is that it's your software that's causing the problem, try some
of these and see which one suits you best:

Shareware
All Audio Recorder - http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/AllAudioRecorder/
RIP Vinyl - http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/RIP_Vinyl/
LPRipper - http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/LPRipper/
Media Digitalizer - http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/MediaDigitalizer/

Freeware
Audiograbber - http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Audiograbber/

True. But... quality costs. There are however, way cheaper progs which can
do the job quite nicely. But, others will have to tell, which ones, since i
wouldn't know...sorry...

I would guess the ONLY way to keep a continuous mix from
popping/clicking where processing is applied, is NOT to break up the
tracks, but to process the whole compilation as one, applying effects
to selections and than applying tracks by cuesheet or "Insert track".

WinOnCD is a FAR better product from ROXIO than Easy CD cremator -
when they acquired this from Cequadrat, they should have binned ECDC.

WinOnCD has an "effects track" and a "volume track", which can be used
to apply adjustments to a compilation.

Or if you want FREE
www.exactaudiocopy.org - EAC has a "Process wave" editor that is VERY,
VERY clean indeed.
It's spectral subtraction (Profile noise / Remove noise) worked
smoothly, and it can also apply equalization.

If you assemble the clicked compilation to a single WAV, it may also
be able to declick it (using the Glitch remove), or find the dodgy
points (Detect pops) and allow you to manually eliminate them
(Frequency presrerving interpolate, a truly amazing feature that is
ideal for manual disguise of defects).
It can also create a cuesheet, and burn with most drives that support
SAO (cuesheet) mode, though from the wave editor, the problem of
generating non-compliant cue files does not occur, so any program that
can burn a cue (burn from image / foreign image format) can burn, even
if EAC's own burn engine isn't compatible with the drive.

EAC really is the swiss army knife of audio tools!

Re: Converting cassettes/records to CD - question .....

You could use SoundForge...equally expensive program...but...go to
www.froogle.com and type in either 'Adobe Audition Academic' or 'Soundforge
Academic'. Soundforge should actually be cheaper, $149 last time I checked.
There's also Steinberg: Wavelab Essential, but that's $199. I personally use
Soundforge, and am very happy with it for my needs.
