DJ name (in hip-hop) necessary?

Hey all. I'm getting ready to start finding work, but I think I may
need a DJ name. I keep shying away from this idea because it really
isn't necessary; however, I am strictly a hip-hop turntable dj and
many of my friends seem to think to use one's own name lowers
credibility with this audience. Not asking for name suggestions, just
thoughts on this topic.

Re: DJ name (in hip-hop) necessary?

Hip hop began with people using nick-names. Does anybody know what Grand
Master Flash's name is?

Look at Kool Herc, Jazzy Jay, Afrika Bambaataa, etc. I say "keep it real"
and come up with something different. What ever you do don't put "DJ" in
front of it. Way too many people are doing that.

I think you should make use of your intials. "Slick MF" for example could
have a double meaning

Well said, i agree.. if you're doing hip-hop a nickname could make a big
difference. House/trace is where you can leave the full name. (Paul
Oakenfold, Carl Cox, Paul Vandyk, John Digweed... etc etc...)

DJ TecThreat <-- yea, i know.. i put DJ in front of it
The Real Threat

Thanks to all for the replies -- they definitely point me in the right
direction. And yes, strictly hip-hop and its cousins is what I spin,
so I must tailor myself to that audience.
