View Full Version : Practice or Instinct

This is a question specifically for DJ's. Do you need to practice a specific piece for a show or club before playing it? Or do you sometimes make up whatever you have and you play it by instinct?

It seems like DJ's, those that I have seen, have this instinct to play with music.

I cant speak from being a DJ, but I can speak from some I know. I have one friend that just goes with whatever he feels at the time, and another that does practice. Most I see practice before a large show/new venue type of thing, but for the others its all about the flow.

I just go with the flow. I never practice whenever I go on board. What I am practicing are the words that I can hardly pronounce well. :)

I just let it flow. It probably looks like I am practicing before the show but I'm not, I'm just loosening up my nerves. I get stage fright sometimes so I usually calm myself by playing with the music for a while.

I think you could easily practice the timing of pieces you want to use if you have a planned setlist you want to use and you have to fit it in a certain timeframe. Otherwise its probably easier to just go with it. A good DJ has a feeling for the music and shouldn't need a scripted setlist to perform well.

I'm not sure if the real DJ's will approve with what I have to say. Being a DJ, you kind a know what are the musics/songs that go together. Because of playing so many times, they have it in their system how the music works so it will be natural for them to play without practicing.
