DJing == extreme monitor/headphone volume?
I'm considering getting involved in the forthcoming Internet radio
station at my college as a DJ/producer, but I'm concerned about the threat to my hearing from DJing... From most of the posts I have read on the LAB, DJs need 2x-3x the monitor/headphone volume to beatmatch as there is FOH volume. (I've read stories of 2 x DeltaMax/1 x MTL2 a few feet from the DJ on either side used as DJ monitors.) Do you really NEED that much monitor volume to DJ/perform live electronic music well? (I shudder to think of having a DeltaMax, PS15, or ANY PA cabinet that close to your ear.) --Douglas |

I set my headphone volume very low for mixing. It all comes down to
personal preference, noise cancellation of the headphones themselves, and cueing options on the mixer. Regardless of how loud or quiet you set your headphones, you will experience some level of hearing loss if you DJ long enough. Whatever you do protect your hearing with good quality, flat response earplugs. I don't use a real lot - normally just enough to beatmatch. Also, if you have a cue mix on the mixer you can use it to bleed in a little bit of the program signal which can help. Since you're talking about djing in a radio studio, you'll need next to nothing, probably only the studio's monitors will be enough. Mind you, you don't have a PA then to drown out any mistakes. ;-) Aeris. |
