Do you trust checking in your DJ set as luggae on the airlines.
I've got a gig in Texas where the Bride/Groom have already rented out a sound
system, I just need to bring my DJ setup along with my music. Basically, my setup (a Rane MP2, 2 Pioneer CDJ 700s, and a Behringer 1202 Mic Mixer; all in an SKB mixer case) could probably make it, but due to the fact that every piece of checked luggage has to be inspected and you can't lock it anymore. I'm not so sure I want to go that route. My other option was to mail my setup to my destination, either whole or only with the neccessary pieces to get the job done on the gig. Who's had exerience on the airlines? |

I understood that you *could* lock it, they just might break it open. And if it's an aluminium case full of electronics, then I wouldn't be at all surprised if they did. However, I would hope they can pick basic locks - the locks on flight cases seem to be there to stop them popping open rather than to prevent theft, so I suspect they could be picked really easily (if they can be bothered). > My other option was to mail my setup to my > destination, either whole or only with the neccessary pieces to get the job > done on the gig. Probably still just as likely to get opened (if it ends up going by air anyway). Any chance of getting the essentials into hand luggage? Are you travelling with someone who can carry some of it? Can you pay an excess? Would it be cheaper to hire the equivalent when you get there? Haven't checked my gear in myself, but shared a flight with a bunch of people who did a few months ago (usual rackmount gear). They didn't seem to have any troubles, but I don't know if they locked their stuff or not. |

I would save a lot of bother and just rent an entire system at the far end.

You'll still have to bring your music. Here's a trick, I learned from a photographer: bring everything, you require to do the job as carry-on. I'm a raver, so that just means 40 od rekkiids, and head-phones. You wedding boys, prolly carry a lot more music, so you may have to pick the CDs you can't live without. New variable into the equation....what if the client is a relative...so this is
a free gig. Normally I would pass on all costs to the customer, but in this case...i'm stuck to choose how to get the main piece, my DJ set...over there...keep in mind...it's probably no bigger than the case the would normally hold two Pioneer CDJ-700s and a DJM-500. |

Re: Do you trust checking in your DJ set as luggae on the airlines.
Well, that creates a conundrum for you. I would suggest that they hire on
your behalf at their end. The idea of lugging a rig around and "trusting" the airline not to lose it or damage it is a scary one. Besides it will most likely cost you extra $$$$ on the flight, for excess baggage. Either way you are going to be out of pocket. Cos you have not only the case, but your CDs and regular luggage to contend with. Besides, if they are hiring the PA, the rental on three extra components isn't going to be much.
