Female bands

I was listening to a female band this afternoon when this thought crossed my mind. Is the music of female bands taken as seriously as the music of the male bands ? To me it seems that often it's 'how hot they are' that gets precedence over their music. Is that indeed the case or am I getting weird ideas ? Just in case I am right , do you think it's an advantage or disadvantage for the girl bands ?

I doubt it, I highly doubt it really. Most of the time a female has to be in (whatever type male dominated) industry for many years, before even taken remotely serious. Kind of bothers me abit, I'm not a wuss, but I'm not a feminist either, I just think if you can do the job, do it, and the rest need to stfu and go on about their business.

I think some female bands are taken seriously. Look at The Pussycat Dolls. They were created with the idea of being pretty, dancing well, singing well, and being good role models. They are a total package not some recording booth filtered one hit wonder. Amy Lee of Evanescence is also taken seriously as is Madonna. Alot of female singers tend to not be taken seriously because they don't know what they want to do in music. They record a pop album, then a album of ballads, then one of country, then rock. Since so many popular muscicians these days are in it for fame and money not talent its hard to take them seriously. But I would wager that Amy Lee is every bit as good as Steve Tyler and could be around just as long if she ever settles down on a steady band.

There are very few in the music or even as an example the movie/tv industry taken serious. I still hear alot of people talk about a women during an interview will still get the "Come have a sit on my couch and we can work something out". I think the only reason female DJ's are cut some slack is if they really can rip it better than the males, or they are hot, or a mix of the two.

In my opinion glamor works only till a certain point .Beyond that it's their talent and music that decides their popularity or the lack of it. There are many examples of girl bands and female singers who look good , but didn't quite make it music-wise. It's proof enough that ultimately it's their music that matters more than their looks.

To be honest, I often wonder how many mainstream acts (both male and female) get popular, since they often very little REAL talent. Artists like Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys can barely even write their own music, let along sing well. So yes, I often think they only get popular because somebody finds them attractive.

I think gender doesn't really effect the music. I assume that it depends on the people who are listening to the kind of music a singer is singing/performing. Look at Celine Dion and Mariah Carey, they are still in the music industry for a long time because their music still cater to many people's listening choices which in this case is more on pop/love songs. As long as there are people listening to the music an artist is playing, then that artist can still sell songs.
