help choosing a mixer

Hello:

I am looking at purchasing a - Gemini pdm14 mixer. The guy that's selling
is giving me a price of $99 Canadian. Now, the thing
I noticed about the unit is it has a good sound (but then again I linked it
to my sonic maximiser) - and the dials on it are really
flimsy (they just flop up and down... very loose).

Does anyone recommend this unit? - any reviews? anything better I could look
at?

Thanks
Richard

I have a Gemini UMX-9 mixer, it has the "rail glide" faders.. they are
supposed to be loose. So as long as the level goes up and down
smoothly with no noise or intermittent I would say it's ok. I don't
know if that model has the rail-glide but as long as all the channels
feel pretty much the same...

As far as whether it's an ok mixer, I haven't used it so couldn't say.
$99 Canadian is a decent price if it's in good condition.. it sells
new for $120 American.. We had a long thread about this some months
ago... It doesn't have channel trim knobs, it doesn't have channel
eqs.. two things that can be kind of important depending on what kind
of mixing you are doing. If your goal is to DJ dance music
(beatmatching) I would get a better mixer if at all possible. Maybe
you'll have to settle for less channels.. two or three channels
instead of 4, to get it at a price you can afford. On the other hand
if you just want to transition one song to another, it will work fine.
Down at this end of the price range you can't expect too much. But
looking on Ebay I see lots of reasonable mixers selling in that same
price range. I see NEW Behringer DJX-400's and DX626's going in your
price range.. they are not 19" rack mount though, and 2 or 3 channels
not 4. But depending on your setup that might be not a problem, or
even a good thing. I used to have a 19" rack mounted setup, now I
have a left-to-right arrangement with a 10" "battle style" mixer, and
I prefer it. It's all a matter of taste. I see tons of used Numark
mixers. I see some Numark CM100 mixers going for pretty cheap.. that
is a similar model to the one you are looking at, except it does have
level trims on each channel, and I think it's a little better in the
input/output department.
