Greetings,

I'm listening to the Peter Rauhofer reconstruction of WBT and thinking...
where do these guys get the acapella tracks? I'd love to do some
"reconstructions" myself....

Some of them have connections and end up getting them direct from the
artists or (less likely) their labels, some spend a ton of money
finding limited-availabilty promo vinyls that have them, and others
simply 'make' their own acapellas. That's right, with some really
fine-tuned filtering, you can get a usable vocal out of most pop tracks.

Thanks for your informative (and quick!) reply.

I guess in Peter's case the label went to him with the track and said, "make
us proud", because MC's vox are too clean for "fine-tuned" filtering... at
least as-far-as-I-know... can that type of clarity be obtained from
filtering alone?

What a privilege it would be to hear that track naked...

You said, "finding limited-availability promo vinyls that have them", the
artist's labels release promos on vinyl with acappella takes of the songs?
Or are these filtered versions of the full mix?

If the labels release the promos then... why do they do that? Is it to
showcase the singers "raw" talent? Or for "collectors" purposes... or...?

Looks like Peter is always asked to do the remixes so I'm sure he's getting
the pristine vocal tracks. Here is a quote from DJ Magazine:

"I never had a manager or an agent who got the remixes. Everything I got was
because I was hired by people to do a remix for this or that song. I got
another remix offer that I turned down because I don't feel the track. I
just choose what I really like. If I feel it and believe that it sounds
great, then I believe that my mix is good."
