looking for classic old skool tunes....

I'm DJing next week at an old skool night along with 7 or 8 other DJs. I was
never into old skool but over the years I have gradually liked the music more
and more. I played at an old skool night a few months ago with pretty much the
same line up as next week's and I really enjoyed it BUT I couldn't help racking
my brains about the classic tunes that we didnt/forgot to play. We did pretty
much cover everything..all the usual stuff. I played stuff like "Don't You Want
Me" by Felix, "Open Your Mind" by Usura, "Welcome To Tommorow" by Snap, "The
Only Rhyme That Bites" by 808 State, "Chime" by Orbital, Something Good" by
Utah Saints...that kind of stuff.

I want to play stuff which nobody else will cover and thats why I played the
songs above...I want the crowd to turn round and say to each other "fuck me, I
love that tune, remember that!"

I was flicking thru MTV the other day and seen "Street Tuff" by Rebel MC's and
I said to myself "fuck me I loved that tune." I'm gonna play it at the
forthcoming event but can any of you recommend anymore similiar tunes? tunes
that we have somehow forgot about.

sorry for the rant.....................

cheers,

Re: looking for classic old skool tunes....

I will have a good look around for a few websites. Of course I have loads of
tracks right her but would they be just what you are looking for? I'm not
sure. As a starting block you might want to do a simple search for
compilations from back in the time that you mentioned. Look at the
tracklistings and think "Jesus! why didn't I think of that one?" There are a
few classic Hacienda compilations and they would certainly be my choice but
going on a few of the tracks that you already mentioned and no disrespect
here, they are a little mainstream. Is that what you were looking for or the
real golden ones that really used to akes peoples spines shiver?

like I said, I wasn't really into old skool back then and I've just gradually
got into it. I have heard a few Hacienda compilations and I've liked some of
the stuff but most of the stuff is too heavy for me...far to old skool if you
know what I mean. Reading what you have said has made me see just how
mainstream my track selection was...but I do want it to be mainstream and
identifiable rather than Hacienda style stuff. The crowd aren't the most clued
up of clubbers because of the area that I live in but nevertheless it will
hopefully be a good night. Can you recommend any good "mainstream" tracks that
might have slipped my mind?
