Mardi Gras Party Suggestions Needed

Hello All,

I'm booked for a Mardi Gras party. Never done one before, had a
rudimentary knowledge of New Orleans/Louisiana music, but could really
use a few pointers. I've got all the traditional cajun and zydeco
artists covered, and even some of the cross-over stuff like Neville
Brothers and Sonny Landreth.

One thing I need is Mardi Gras/New Orleans brass jazz band parade type
music. Are there any appropriate compilations out there? I know
about some of the obvious choices like Preservation Hall, but a list
of Mardi Gras brass jazz would be very helpful.

Another thing I'd like is a good selection of mainstream artists who
have cut cajun or zydeco style music. I'm thinking along the lines of
"Blue Bayou" by Roy Orbison (or the Ronstadt version), "Adalida" by
George Strait, "Born On The Bayou" by CCR, "Down At The Twist And
Shout" by Mary Chapin Carpenter, "Amos Moses" by Jerry Reed, some of
the Little Feat stuff, etc. Any others?

Those are my two main concerns. Any other experience in this
situation or suggestions you have to share are also welcome.

Thanks folks, I look forward to your responses.

I would avail myself of a copy of the Ace Records comp. Another Saturday
Night - lots of uptempo cajun / R&B / soul crossover stuff on that, and some
Meters would probably go down well too... it's funk, but it's Southern
funk... something like Jambalaya or Hey Pocky A-Way.

Good luck.

Re: Mardi Gras Party Suggestions Needed

Don't forget the soul/funk scene in N.O. that the Neville Brothers
grew up with. I'm thinking Eddie Bo, King Floyd, Dr. John, etc.
Definitely get your hands on the Meters - funky 'til the end of time.
And for soul/zydeco fusion, my favorite is Beau Jacque and the Zydeco
High Rollers.

The music in New Orleans is so good, I don't think you'll have too
hard a time. Man I miss that town...

Kraft

P.S. I'm interested in knowing some bands to look for on the
Chimneyville, Josie and Sundazed labels, etc. I want to channel some
of that voodoo funk power too!
