Mixing ?

Can anyone give me some advice on how to beat mix mainstream chart
stuff?

I can mix house tunes but i think that's because most tunes start with
just beats and you can always find a good section to mix into.

I want to play more than just house!

Anyone got any tips?

Cheers Andy

I *think* that kind of stuff has a fairly set intro & outro that you can
use to do the mix. I guess that means starting the next tune about
halfway through the chorus (where it tends to repeat itself). I'm not the
expert on this kind of mixing, (because I do hard trance) but that's my
best guess...

OK - Try this:
Learn the music you are playing. Just as a musician, for best
performance, has to "know" and "feel" what he is playing, a truly
skilled and talented DJ should do the same.

As a drummer trained in my youth, I was taught the very most important
part in dealing with any part of the rhythm section -

COUNT!

Know how many bars or measures will get you to a part that will ensure
a clean mix. Know how long your intro is; know the break; and be sure
to have a backup plan if you miss it.

I can't tell you how many very talented DJs I have seen who have
simply blown this part of the biz and could never get their timing
right.
It is important - trust me.

One bar where I DJ wants mostly top 40 clean cuts so I get Promo Only and
end up mixing those radio edits. If you are using CDs, the trick is to have
a player that gives you seamless looping. You can then create a seamless
loop of the first one or two 8 counts, thus creating an extended intro. If
you get a player with more than one loop per disc, multiple hot starts,
and/or decent sampler time, then with practice you'd be amazed at how
extended you can make these little radio edits. With lots of practice and
some talent you can make live remixes using those kinds of features.

If you're using vinyl, I recommend getting some good break beat collections
to fill the gaps. And if you are lucky enough to be using at least 3
turntables, you could use the breakbeats and two copies of the same record
and really mix it up.

Hope that helps.
