New to this world

Hi everyone,
My name is Kelly. I am just beginning to get into the DJ world and i have no
clue where to begin. I am thinking i want to start out with using my laptop
for doing some mixes and than once I get good enough, I could go onto the
real equipment.
The problem is, I don't know where to begin with hooking up to DJ from a
laptop.... can any of you direct me on how to do this? Like what do i need?
Software.... cables... speakers... etc...
Any help is appreciated!

Kelly

Re: New to this world

try software called "atomix". Its cheating but it will give you something
to play with for a while.

Re: New to this world

What exaclty would you like to do? If you simply want to mix mp3's you
got on your laptop without any extra hardware, there's software
available like Native Instruments' Traktor Studio
you can mix audio files or even songs from an audio cd, but it won't
give you the feeling of realy mixing with vinyl...
I've heard of a hardware device you can connect to your computer to
mix mp3's & stuff, but I can't remember the name... I'll let you know
if it comes back to my :-)

If you'd like to try out Traktor Studio, feel free to mail me ...

If u have the money get final scratch and traktor fs. With this u can use
normal turntables and mixer to mix mp3s and vinyl.

Re: New to this world

well, I cant's say welcome Kelly as I'm a newcomer here meself...so Hi.
back to your question..
Tradition advises to get the "real" stuff and start off form there. Anyway
since computers, soundcards and IT in general has advanced a lot, nowdays a
good mp3 mixing system is a good starting point with low overall costs. So
you'll get the feeling if you like to push forward a DJing career or just
drop it at some point being sure the bank won't drop you At the moment u
think to turn the hobby into profession then surely you have to make ready
the big bucks and get the proper equipment. But that's another story...
Before starting to propose you different softwares or hardwares, at a given
moment you should start digging around the net and learn some hardware
principles that you'll always need. Things like types of cables, and cabling
methods, adaptors, speakers spec. should be learnt by heart.
Now..I see you already have a laptop, and that is likely to be your
"player". I'll rank different choices so you can reflect on what suits to
your needs:
Choice1.
get Winamp 5.0 www.winamp.com and any DJ plugins in the plugins section like
SqrSoft Advanced Crossfading Output.
hook up your laptop with your home sound system and you'll be able to
crossfade your songs. This is just xfading so is far away and has nothing to
do with improving DJ skills. The only thing you might profit is creating an
idea what songs goes well with the another one. And oh yeah you have time to
eat your burger while you "mix"

Choice2.
Get any of the following listed softwares..... try their demos first:
BPM Studio http://www.alcatech.de/
Traktor Dj http://www.traktor-dj.com/
Atomix MP3 / Virtual DJ http://www.atomixmp3.com/
PCDJ http://www.visiosonic.com/
Supossing your laptop has only 1 Audio Line Out, at this stage all you can
do is hear the output of your mix no matter which of the above mentioned
softwares you'll use. You're not able to monitor your cue song until you get
an USB, PCMCIA, or Firewire sound card with dual indipendent channels. I've
seen some product a couple of months ago so I have to search around the net
for the links and I'll post them back here. Prices might range from 100$ to
250$.

Choice3
Like FUQ sugested you can go for a Final Scratch system + Traktor DJ
http://www.finalscratch.com/fs4/start.asp which is the best solution to
mp3DJing. However you'll need for this a regular set of turntables/CD
players and a mixer so this might be your final step solution.

For any of the given choices you'll need the appropriate cables to hook up
your laptop's soundcard output with your home hi-fi system. So go down the
store and get 1 stereo jack - 2RCA male, and 2RCAmale - 2RCA male cable.
Start playing around and if u like it, consider moving to proper equipments.
Personally I would suggest to you to get a cd dj pack which generally vary
between 300-500$. You'll learn somehow the "hardway" rather then using
"click and auto beat matching" buttons on softwares. Get a good pair of
headphones for proper monitoring. This depends on personal preferences but
for my taste you can get for a a good quality/price ratio either the Sony
MDR-V500 or the Pioneer SEDJ 5000 both for around 100-110$. Don't buy cheap
shit 20$ crap that won't last more then 2 weeks. Get a good pair that u can
use for different purposes and that will be there for you when ready to go
serious
Enough for tonight....food time
