Pioneer Mixers

I'm in the market to finaly upgrade my mixer. I've been running a
Vestax PMC pro series for the last 6 years. Don't get me wrong the
thing rocks! Built like a tank and works like a charm, evry time.
However, I am now looking at the Pioneer mixers. I have played on both
the DJM 500 and 600, but am rather intrigued by the DJM-3000. In
comparrison I want to know what some of you think about theese mixers.
OBVIOUSLY If I can afford the 600 why even bother with the 500, true.
Point taken. What I am most interested in is comparing the 600 and the
3000. I am looking for feedback from people who have actually used
BOTH mixers and what their preference is. Thanks.

The 3000 and 600 are basically the same.. The 3000 has like 1 or 2
extra features I forget what they are off the top of my head but
they're really close. If you have the money I'd check out the pioneer
909.. It has dual effect etc.. on each channel...

I haven't used the DJM-3000 so technically you don't want to hear from
me, but I'll comment anyway and you can ignore me if you want to
I've used the 500 a bunch and the 600 a few times...

Between the DJM-500 and the DJM-600:

The 500 has headphone eq, the 600 has cue-house headphone mixing. I
consider the headphone mixing important. So I personally wouldn't buy a
500.

The differences in the effects don't matter that much to me as I rarely
use them.

I find the headphone amp on both mixers to be kind of wimpy, and the
quality of the headphone sound is not impressive. Actually, the sound
quality of these mixers in general I find to be not that impressive for
what they cost. But that's me...

Also, am I the only one that finds the headphone jack broken on just
about every 500/600 I play on?

The DJM-3000 looks like a 600 re-arranged to fit a 19 inch rack mount,
it's probably the same as far as performance goes.

If it was me, I wouldn't get either the 500/600/3000.. I MIGHT consider
the Pioneer DJM-909.. I only got to play on it once but really liked it.
The main limitation there is having just two channels.

If you want 4 channels and a lot of features, look at the Tascam X-9,
which totally kicks the ass of the DJM-600 in every way, for about $50
more. My only complaint about it is that because of all the features,
the front panel is kind of crowded. But I could get used to it

In the same price range is the Rane Empath, for a little less money the
Vestax PCV-275 and the Allen & Heath Xone:32. All of those are way less
featured than these others but what you get is really good sound quality.

The one I would get right now if I could buy anything, is the Allen &
Heath Xone:62, but then, I don't really care that much about the digital
effects (if I did, I could have them external).

It all depends on your priorities...

-Ben

The 3000 has been designed with users of the Pioneer CDJ1000 in mind -
so it's the same as the 600, with some extra functions that only apply
to the CDJs...

Re: Pioneer Mixers

I never cared for the Pioneer mixers because the channel sliders are
way too sensitive. Whenever I mix with the Pioneer mixer I end up
using the rotary gain knobs on them more than anything else. If you
can afford it, go with a Rane. Also, one of the strong selling points
of the Pioneer mixers is the fact that they interact well with the
CD-J line of cd players and have built-in effects processing. Don't
overlook the Gemini and Stanton mixers either. Couple them with an
outboard processing unit such as the Behringer or Pioneer effects
units and you're gold. The next step up from the Rane line are Allen
& Heath which are near-studio quality.

The key factors to finding a good mixer are the following:

smooth faders (not too tough, but also not too sensitive that they
move at the slightest touch)

loud cue volume

separate EQ and gains (very important) for each channel

and several outputs (master, booth, record) etc.

Another thing you can also try is to purchase a studio mixer and
couple it with phono preamps (for the turntables) and perhaps with a
pre-amp (for the headphone cue volume if it isn't loud enough) and see
how well you fare with that.

Also, the effects boxes are much more versatile and offer many more
options than those built into mixers such as the Pioneers.

Many people like the Pioneer mixers, but you can get much higher
quality purchasing separate gear and not getting the all-in-one mixers
such as the Pioneer line of mixers. Most reputable clubs will have
Rane mixers, not Pioneers. Ask any (well, most) of those club
owners/sound guys/DJ's why they have a Rane and not one of the other
mixers and you'll understand why sometimes simplicity is favored over
bells & whistles.

Perhaps overthere, but in the Netherlands the DJ 500+600 are the standard..
They are not bad but 1200 euro is a bit too much..

But you won't get higher quality by buying a Behringer fx unit...
seriously...

Re: Pioneer Mixers

Dear Wil,

it sounds like you have had a real disaster. Not only did you get a
faulty mixer, you had trouble with getting service from Behringer, too
?
We assume that you are based in the Netherlands, so at least we are in
the same time zone ! We propose to get in touch with you directly to
sort out this problem.
If you want, you can write back to us with a telephone number where we
can call you during business hours.
What we would like to know is (a) which model was causing you such bad
problems, and (b) from which company did you purchase the unit.
Even better if you could find a reference to the Behringer returns
authorisation number, then we can check exactly what went wrong at
this end.
Normally our service for the Netherlands is very good - so we are very
sorry if it wasn't good for you.
We really want to know why this happened, to help restore your faith
in our product, and to make sure that the same thing doesn't happen to
anyone else.

Please write back to me directly - a.cullen@behringer.de
We apologise for the inconvenience, and we're sure that together we
can resolve the problem very soon.

Best regards

Andy Cullen
