PLASA

It's on now at Earls Court London Until Wednesday.

This years event sees some new innovations at last after a few pretty bland
exhibitions in recent years.

Check out Technics new Digital Decks!

or Pioneer's updated CDJ1000 the 'MKII'

The futures coming don't miss it,

TJ

Hope to put a page together with some info and a few pics for those who
can't make it...will post in due course.

Re: PLASA

<PLASA>

Sadly going down the toilet. Having attended since the days of olympia I
have to say what a piss poor effort it has become.

The days of the great impressive lightshows from Clay Paky, NJD, Martin &
Abstract have gone.

Here are my PLASA awards:

Most Stupid Entry System
£12 for a piece of paper - move to that desk to fill it in, then to that one
for a badge, then to that one for a wallet and entry. Thank god I had a
badge.

Most mad concept - Having to pay to view gear that people want to sell.
Ummmm

Worst Event of the day
Carl 'bore the fuck out of us all' tuff-enough Brown - for managing to play
nearly every choon ever made with his name in it (nearly got the golden
goose egg thrown at him - wanka)

Abstract Award of Build Quality
101 things to do with an old fire exit sign and some small lamps

Denon + Pioneer & Technics joint stupidity award for assuming all club
owners and DJ's want cd decks that can be scrathed with

Native Instruments for simular stupidity but replace CD with PC

Emission for there complete screw up attempt to market PCDJ in the UK.
Displaying the wonderful PCDJ FX with karaoke plugin and unable to
demonstrate it working on 2 screen - That wins the Kermit The Frog aware of
stand planning.

The how much money have you got award going to all stand holders for staring
at every badge to see how much money it was worth.

Still on the plus side - many less sad mobile DJ's wearing crap made Tee
Shirts & jackets bearing things like 'Moonlight Disco DJ Pastit" - a light
relief. And not too many muppets lining up to have a go on the Gemini DJ
stand for that prestigious 5 minute slot playing to the 'nobody cares'
crowd.

All in all - going downhill
Look out for Plasa 2004 - with even less effort from the exhibitors, more
products nobody wants and can afford, Sausage rolls at only £4 and a
reshuffle of the entry stupidity to include no less than 5 stops to get in.

Errr - so basically I was not as delighted with it as you............

Re: PLASA

LOL, sad T shirts were definitely less evident this year!

On the whole though technology wise though I found it a great improvement on
previous years as i missed the last couple of events for pretty much exactly
the reasons mentioned.

Technics effort with the benefit of their additional development time was
awesome, did you get to play with them ?

Ally the Tech's with a Traktor system (already possible) and I think we'll
all be using something very similar 10 years from now whether we like it or
not.

Re: PLASA

TJ I think the event is wasted - Many of us are working digital systems now.
I was gobsmacked to see so few exhibitors offering anything based in
software.

We now have 5 mobiles running PC systems that offer twin mp3 and karaoke in
one box. I think the future will be in software with plugin controllers.

It seems this scares the shit out of the manufacturors. Barely did I see
software (apart from finalscratch who neglected to demo tractor for those
who don't give a flying cow about scratching) and Emission who were, as I
said, incapable of displaying the product correctly and unable to offer any
advice about the stack of anoyances that need addressing in PCDJ.

Missing where stands from BPM Studio, Otis and the other players. Missing
where digital karaoke systems, and finding any stands with entry level PC
DMX systems and adaptors was a giggle.

Of the stands dealing with 'software inovations' many where clearly poor
offerings looking like bad visual basic writes!

I did fiddle with the technics, most amused by it. DItto the Denon - but I
don't think it's moving in the right direction.

The real highlight of my day (as an utter hater of Vestax in terms of build
quality, backhanders and tosspot staff) was at the vestax stand where in
front of a large crowd someone shouted - "But what happened to the vinyl
cutter you launched here a few years ago - is this new mixer build to the
same spec?". I did laugh myself to sleep.....

Anyone using the PCDJ system is IMO asking for trouble as I see as nothing
more than the toy which it currently is.

From my experience the Traktor system is the current best of breed MP3 wise,
from the reliability perspective it creates a cut down linux installation on
the PC which from you can then boot which is obviously far more stable than
the windows environment but the big draw is that it uses the interface you
already know via it's timecoded vinyl (or CD's) and your existing mixer so
you just leave the same timecode vinyl (or timecode CD) loaded and then
manuipulate all your MP3s the same way you always have with the added
advantage that you can still use vinyl whenever you like.

As you point out the hardware is more specialised and many Dj's arent tech'y
enough with computers to spec it correctly for the 'sweaty arches'
environment it will likely end up in so that's the only issue you need to be
especially aware of.

I'm currently converting my vinyl and CD's to MP3 which has the added
benefit that my precious originals can now stay locked up ready for use (not
MP3ing live just yet) while at the same time being fully accessible, even
the wife has full access without messing with my collection - a real bonus!

Re: PLASA

Mmmm - We've had no reliability issues with PCDJ in the last few years and
believe me we have systems in sweaty dirty smokey environments.

In the early days we had operating system agro (win 98) but never had a
failure with xp/nt. I will say I was very sceptical at first but the system
has proved itself time and time again.

I can't speak for final scratch but we had significant failures with traktor
to the point where we sacked it. Bpm studio has also been very stable. Hats
off goes to PCDJ, whilst not the prettiest or most feature packed software,
we just can't get it to fall over.

I would say that many PC problems come from a crap mains supply and as a
result all our units have a filtered UPS feeding them and running from the
battery side.

From a mobiles point of view it's ace. Our latest machine runs PCDJ left
deck/right deck on a delta 44 soundcard (twin outs) and CDG Pro feeding its
sound onto the mobo card for karaoke. All independant, best of all, the
karaoke output screen comes up on a second monitor independant of the rest.
Makes mobile and karaoke work sheer simplicity.

That said, I'm old skool and still love to use vinyl - but I don't let
technology bother me!

result all our units have a filtered UPS feeding them and running from the
battery side.

That said, I'm old skool and still love to use vinyl - but I don't let
technology bother me!

re: PLASA

I just got final scratch aka the traktor system. And I must say I'm in
awe about the whole experience... It's incredible how well it works,
and the possibilities it addes to turntablism. I've taken it out to 3
times so far and everyones jaw drops when they see how well it
works...
