playing music from laptop and PRS

Hi Guy's,
I work in clubs in the UK playing my music from laptop. This weekend the
Performing Rights inspectors were in town. One of the DJ's in another club
was caught with just two copied CD's in his collection. These have been
confiscated he has been reported and has lost his job for breach of contract
(works for Chicago Rock).
I have today spoken to the PRS regarding Music on Laptops and they have told
me I need an SG5 licence costing around £500 just so I can copy my CD's to
laptop and Play in the clubs.

Has anybody else come across this yet or been inspected?

I've generally heard that if you can prove you own the original
CDs, they won't have a problem with you (even though you may be
technically breaking the law). This may have changed.

You might get more of a response on UK specific groups - such as
uk.music.makers.dj or even uk.legal.moderated. (Note that As the
latter group is moderated, you have to e-mail uk-legal-moderated
(at) usenet.org.uk to post).

You might find this interesting too:

Thats crazy... I haven't heard of anything like that here in the
states. I think the music industry is out of control. And need to
wake up and realize their free ride is over.

Re: playing music from laptop and PRS

I'm in the USA but many things apply here.
1st - No one has the right to delegate the authority on whats legal and
whats not.
Rubbish? Hearsay? Well lets think now.
Who gives the authority on copying a CD...........tik tik tik....The Author
and Producer
No one else.....
If I release a CD say a 4 EP Promo or a CD in general and say COPY to your
hearts content...that's it
It's my work period no one else's, I own it, if I want to burn it, give it
out whatever.
Now the copright lies within the CD itself no where else.....
Why do you think (besides money, recording on a laptop or computer) that
there are more smaller Record Labels.
People do not want the RULES that apply to them (Labels).
So if I own only 10 CD's and 5 say I can do what I want with them, then I
will.
If the other 5 say you can't do anything then you can;t do anything.
There is NO law that says, "If you want to sing and make a record you have
to follow this LAW and Gov't Rules"
If someone does see this LAW "NOT RIAA" please let me know, I would prefer a
Telephone number or direct link, anything else would be bullshit.

Not sure about the UK laws but umm... what if they were copies of his own
original CD's? I mean, I do that all the time as no way am I bringing 1000+
CD's just to get the best 1 or 2 hits off of one CD not to mention the
occassional potential for damage to your CD's by anything from a drunk
assmunch to a CD player that bites before you hit the "CLOSE" button.
