Synopsis:
I am a 30-year-old "bedroom producer" from Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. My
favorite style to make is Drum and Bass, but as you can see I have made
other styles as well to keep well-rounded. The last song, Go 2!, was made
by my wife (Numerology) and I. To make these songs I used the free demo
version of Fruity Loops 5, found at www.fruityloops.com. Comments, either
by e-mail or posted, are acceptable and desired. Thank you for listening.

Sincerely,
DJ Grid

drumnbass?? where's the bass?? its low quality treble samples...... where's
the basslines? they are missing!!!!
this is just constructive criticism.... if u claim something as "drumnbass"
at least fit the criteria...
dont use crappy claps and snares and hats..... oh yeah, and the cymbal
clashes?? wtf!?

try learning a few other programs, then listenning to a wide range of music,
and then make something.... it may sound alot more different....

jeez, u las vegas yanks wanna get rich and famous quick, dont yas ??

Re: Please Check Out My New Songs

You're probably maxing out your webspace on cox.net (I should know) so
you should look into AcidPlanet.com. Free to join, download free
version of ACID software (optional, but a nice complement to Fruity) and
post your music there. Go to forums for tips and techniques, get
reviews of your songs (to the extent you review others). Let me know
when you get there and I'll be the first to review one of your songs.

Re: Please Check Out My New Songs

Grid mate, what u need to do with that shadow song, is to put a rolling
bassline in the background, something deeper, more sinister... that melody
is okay, but its kinda repetative, and a bit on the dull side... Also, take
out the tamborine sound (the high pitched shaker sound) also take out that
organ sound - that sounds a bit cheesy. The synth at the start sounds good,
that could be a good intro.....
The breaks arent too bad, i like them, how about using two different sets of
breaks, and swapping in between them?
Have you got any flangers or wahwah's ? try using a flanger, and putting
that over the top of some basslines and seeing how that goes, it can produce
some interesting effects.. try achieving a bassline that gets a perfect
note - the type of note is that which resonates, and gets you in the guts..
i dont know if you have ever played with rebirth, or reason, but they are
some good programs to get a feel at resonance, and how it affects the
sound - you will find that you are producing a 'louder' sound, where in
reality, its the same volume, just resonating in a way that its
louder.......... apparently there is a resonating freq that can cause damage
to speakers, and may *i am saying this, as a MAY* cause bowl movements, and
heart problems for some people....

okay, the next song, warriors...
Okay, the intro sounds like a scream tracker mod..... something like i used
to make in 1996...... i used fast tracker, scream tracker, and then in 1998
i moved onto the windows based "modplug" (which is a very high quality
tracker - all the instruments, features, etc) yes, i was new in making
drumnbass back then, and i was into making psytrance, and uplifting
trance... now i'm doing what aphex twin does, makes alot of electronic
noise....

This song seems to be too "full" in the sense that theres too many sounds
going on - there seems to be a short lengthed loop going on thats making a
ticking sound.... sounds a bit annoying..... also, the cymbal crash - i'd
remove it...... it sounds very basic - it used to be the way to lead one
break into another, or one pattern into another.... try doing without it....
also, the hihat tings....... that sounds pretty crap...... sorry mate, but
its just the sound that doesnt suit it....
in respect to that, the xylophone sound isnt really necessary - try having a
more resonating frequency as the melody - try getting a piano sound, and
"fucking around" with it in sound forge, make it twisted, change the
resonation, and freq's...... you'll be amazed with what u can get....
Its not a bad song mate, none of your work is shit, its just still getting
there... you need to listen to alot more drumnbass, and be critical why/when
and most importantly how, it is made...... get a few programs, and have an
experiment with them... learn how samples are made, and start from
minimal...... you dont need to go from zero to hero in one day...... i've
been on this NG since 1999 (i used a different alias) i then left in jan
2001, and then came back in dec 2002... i make a few sounds, but its never
to my likings, i can show you a few of my pieces of work if u wish? however,
as i said before, most of my musical talent/likings come from the
inspirations of aphex twin, squarepusher and venetian snares...

Actually, if you have heard of any of those, you may be familiar with
putting images into sound? I sometimes drop a watermark into my music, so
that no-one can claim it as theirs..... if u wanna know more, please reply
on the NG.

Cheers,

INSiDAH

Re: Please Check Out My New Songs

My options are very limited right now as I am only using the free version of
Fruity Loops. So that is why there is no flange or wahwah or any of that
stuff. I am just getting my feet wet with producing. I listen to tons of
Drum and Bass and can only emulate it as well as the program will let me.
As I get more money in, I will get a new computer, buy studio stuff, etc.
But until then I am pretty much screwed and have to rely on what the program
gives me and what .wav files I can find. It looks like there is a CD of
Virus samples on E-bay that I might bid on. At least then I could get some
decent bass.

If you have some mp3s available on the web, I would be happy to listen to
them. Later, man.

Oh, by the way, I have been working on your suggestions. Less crash, more
bass, etc.

http://members.cox.net/mikefruity1/UKbeat.mp3

You'll still find it cheesy, I'm sure.

Latah,

Re: Please Check Out My New Songs

Thanks.

I was a little offended when Shiva asked if I'd ever heard UK Garage. The
style I was trying to emulate was Dumpvalve Recordings (DJ Genius). It's
not like other Garage.

Anyway, I'll keep trucking away and hopefully get something better than the
free demo of Fruity Loops one of these days. I need a new computer first
and foremost.

Peace,
Grid

Re: Please Check Out My New Songs

grid mate, here's the story.........

you're heading in the right direction, and your attitude is pretty good. i
like it. its where most people should be......
I do like your new song, its not too bad, it does sound still a bit like a
tracked mod........ talking about mods, give them a try, go to
www.modplug.com and have an experiment - download some other mods that other
people have made.....

I've got a mod here from when i first began tracking - i dont want to over
do the songs, as its a bit on the technical dept at the moment, and its best
to start from a solid ground before working into anything too hard......
good question to ask you, do u know how to play the keyboard? or at least
have a bit of a curious drive to playing it? well, if ya kinda know how the
keys on the piano work, you're set with tracking mods......... i found this
program (on the website i provided you) to be REALLY GOOD and they keep
updating it.... i havent used it in 6 months i reckon, so maybe its time for
a trip back?? who knows.......
here's a link to my mod i made a while ago, please note that my old
nickname/tag was "Clawdor" - i was a very young 18 year old producer... so
green, and so basic...... but, get a listen to this tune, its called "bass
of the jungle" - i went on to make more tunes, but sadly, they were trance,
and also, i lost most of them - i only have 1 other song remaining - i
trusted webspace to keep my files, and got rid of my computer (sold it) and
when i got back to reclaiming my songs, they had all mysteriously been
lost..... no doubt, i was very pissed off, and so had to deal with
it........ here's the web url - winamp can play this song, but i suggest u
look at how it actually works, and how each sample/pattern interacts with
each other..... its a great mod, and its only 4 channels..... oh yeah, and
the best thing about mods, is that they are really small - this 5 and a half
minute song is only half a Mb.
www.members.westnet.com.au/bedwell/bass.xm

and another song i made, about 2 months ago - very quick, sounds nasty, but
nonetheless, its still something basic..
www.members.westnet.com.au/bedwell/dlatw.mp3 (its called "dont laugh at
the wind" )

anyways, give that a shot, download other mods, and tear them apart - look
at their sequences, borrow some samples, and have a good time about it.....
dont stress - u dont need to make ripper tunes right away...... there's not
many people here who actually know about composing music - people here are
from all walks of life in the jungle community - be it listeners, producers,
dj's, promoters, managers, drug runners for manchester, etc etc..... we dont
take u for who u are.....

drop me an email if u wanna get chattin about tunes mate, i've got alot of
time for people who are interested in music, for the love of it, and not the
profit.....

take it e-z mate,

Andrew
aka INSiDAH

OK. Cool.

Yep. I took 9 years of piano lessons when I was a kid. I also played drums
for 12 years in jazz bands, orchestras, etc. When I was really little I
played the violin. Started in kindergarten and learned the Suzuki method
(how to play by ear).

Ahh, that is way better bass than I've been getting. Interesting. It's got
that old school Jungle flava.

Nice intro and more good bass. What did you use to make that?

Here's my cheesy song from last night called "Come On DJ."
http://members.cox.net/mikeandsheila1/ComeOnDJ.mp3
It's very light in places, but I think that's OK sometimes.

Sheila is my wife and sometimes helps me write songs under the name of
Numerology. We're going to make a new Techno track tonight. We make a song
together weekly.

Peace and feel free to e-mail me too.

Re: Please Check Out My New Songs

yeah, my wife loves jungle, but i dont understand her...... she says she
loves it, but she never goes out, and she prefers trance on her mp3 player
when she runs..... crazy!

okay, a program i use to whip samples together graphically is Sonic
Foundry(tm) Acid 4.0 Its a decent program to easily chuck samples together
and string them about... I bought Dance5 by the dodgy Ejay company for $5
AUD, and havent really given that much of a shot yet.....
I'm always bashing different sounds out on sonic foundry(tm) sound
forge....... thats a decent program to modify samples.... i tend to get away
from the STANDARD samples... i like to just tweak each sample, so that its
my own little bit of flavour..

yeah, so u used modplug eh? nice program, its a very stable shell, and
offers alot, for practically nothing... i was making tunes on it with my old
pentium 90 in 1997/8 - tho, very cheesy, i got on the net, listened, looked,
and got a feel for what there is out there..... also, have a look at reason,
cubaseVST, rebirth(for some understanding of old hardware.... most music
made is probably trance or beats, but no drumnbass..... cant go that hard)

oh yeah, and your last tune is pretty good mate, keep up the good work, i
think u have the idea now man...
try some grownling basslines, instead of a soft hum sound....... make it
rough, tweak it up!

So, on ya webpage, are you going to put up a "about me, and why i like this
stuff" page? I think the page needs it - some bios about yourself, and why u
made each song.... thats a good way to inform people about your own style..

cheers mate, bring on more flavour!

Re: Please Check Out My New Songs

also,

i've made a basic sample for you to check out - its using a program called
"coagula light" i think its for free, i dont know, i've always had it on my
computer.......
anyways, it turns pictures into sounds... from bmp into wav.
download a spectrum analyser, and see if u can see the image in this
sample...... when u start getting into the sampling, and sound forgery of
samples, thats when things get complicated, and interesting...

www.members.westnet.com.au/bedwell/insidah.wav

oh, and i've included a pic of my two prizes - my wife and my car...

http://www.members.westnet.com.au/bedwell/insidah.jpg

some things have been graphically modified, but hey, shit happens ahaha
oh, and if you are looking for a decent spectrum analyzer, try daqarta
spectrum analyzer. its a good program, and u can see alot of stuff........
also, if u have this spectrum analyzer, try viewing some of aphex twin's
songs - there's a song that is a formula, and cannot be typed on the
keyboard, but it may be called "formula" try making that sound into a wav,
and then running it thru - you'll be amazed with what u find - i found it by
fluke, and it scared the shit out of me...
