Re: A DJ with no disks? How?

I listened to a set on Radio1 in the UK on Monday night/tuesday morning,
which I think was live from the Solar (???) Festival in Spain. It was
some guy signed to warp records using a modular synth type program on a
mac (possibly reaktor, but I don't think that's what he said) as a 5
track recorder, connected to mics and synths... he was creating loops of
vocals on-the-fly, and the whole set was a live impro. I was impressed
with the control and sponaneity he was able to obtain using digital
instrumentation. I've always regarded computers mainly as a sequencing
tool, without much thought for jamming and impro...
I think the set is available on the r1 website.

Re: A DJ with no disks? How?

by the way: there is a swiss artist called MICH GERBER. he plays the cello,
but not in the classical sense.

I saw two life gigs of him. so this guy is on stage, alone. the only
equipment is some kind of sequencing tool and a pre-programmed beat. so the
bet sets in and mich starts to play a short melody on his cello. this melody
is then reproduced by the sequencer and mich plays a second melody which is
again reproduced by the sequencer (together with the first melody).... and
so on and so on. sounds really trippy.

unfortunately there are no sound samples on his website
(http://www.michgerber.ch) but if you google it you will surely find
something.

Re: A DJ with no disks? How?

Brian May used to do something like that with a long delay.--

Robert Fripp built a solo career (after King Crimson) around this very
concept.

Re: A DJ with no disks? How?

As did Robert Fripp with his Frippertronics performance setup.

There is even a way of er... "DJing" with a mixer only. I've a friend who
plays (not in any club for god's sake ) sets with his mixer by somehow
short-circuiting outs and ins - amplifying the small voltage amounts - and
then looping them all way round and adjusting the sound by knobs. Pretty
noisy but it can sound quite enormous
