Re: Matching Beats

one other really important thing--

especially when first mastering 'beat-matching' -- you should make
sure you only have 1 beat going at a time. Unless the 2 records are
*perfectly* beat-matched, having both LOW BASS dropping at once won't
sound very good. I've heard people refer to this as the epervesant
"train-wreck"...

Mix the highs and mids in first, and get it matched up well. Then
'trade' the beats if you will, turn the LOW EQ on the beat that's
playing totally DOWN (quiet), at the same time you turn the LOW EQ on
the record you're bringing in UP to full volume. This is probably the
most 'simple' of the progressive, beat-matched mixes, if you can
describe a mix so vaguely. It's easier said than done (although still
hard to describe with words), but if you have a love for it and keep
with it, it starts to flow naturally.

1 thing I do-- get your levels before you start mixing, and then don't
turn your EQs up more than you know you need to. Play a record on one
channel, and then swap to the other channel. Set your sliders at 7,
and all EQs in the middle. Play both records, and adjust your gain
until they are playing at the same volume.

Now when you mix, keep your sliders at whatever volume you want it at,
and you shouldn't have to touch your gain. When you turn an EQ down,
kill it all the way; but never bring the EQ up past half-way, or '0'
neutral. This is especially important if you're recording, but not so
much so if you're just mixing in your garage.

Anyway, enough talk about this, ITS TIME TO MIX! =)
