Re: Question about a few different kinds of turntables

A friend of mine has the TT200's - I've given them a run and I wasn't
impressed. The pitch control seemed a little flimsy - too easy to whip
around. The platter was very light and sensitive, as I remember.

As anyone who regularly reads this NG probably already knows, I currently
have two Stanton STR8-80s and am very happy with them. I would have lived
with the TT200s if I had gotten them, but in comparison, I'm glad I got the
8-80s.

I mix too, and I'm an advocate of "light-touch," so perhaps the TT200s would
be advantageous for developing that skill. But then again, am I just seeing
the glass as a little too "half-full?"

Re: Question about a few different kinds of turntables

Justin,
I haven't actually spun extensively on a pair of Techs, so I can't really
tell you the explicit difference. From what I've seen of other DJs on
Techs - they are without equal. But as a budget alternative, I'm going to
tell you that I'm perfectly comfortable with mixing on my STR8-80s. It's
actually more full featured than the 1200s, with 78 RPM, reverse, and a +12%
selector for the pitch control, as well as pitch correction and quartz lock.
The only obvious difference is the construction, because the STR8-80s are
plastic, so if you were going to gig around with them - it would be a little
more delicate.

I would recommend the STR8-80s to anyone who wants "budget" decks. But if
you get a chance to try 'em, do so, because for some reason, I'm pretty sure
they pale in comparison to the Techs. <g> But the Stantons have a straight
arm, which I've heard causes poorer sound quality; I honestly have never had
the opportunity to hear the difference. I can't imagine that it woudl be
that bad.

Good luck,
Neonik
