Recording Mixes to Computer

I have been trying to record my DJ mixes to computer, but have been
running into some serious problems.

here's my Setup

(Technics 1200)->RCA->(Pioneer DJM 3000 Mixer)->RCA to 1/8"->(Computer
with SB Live 5.1)

First, my files have very low volume when played back. When I turn up
the output gain on the mixer on the input volume on the soundcard, I
get a large amount of clipping.

Second, all mid and high frequencies seem to be very flat or cutoff.
Everything sounds great in the headphones, but the output sounds like
the higher frequnescies are being squished down.

Would a line amp help for the volume? Would switching to a different
soundcard with S/PDIF input help the sound quality issues?

Any help or expereinces would be of great assistance.

There are two gains involved: one is the hardware one in the Pioneer,
the other is part of the soundcard software. Experiment with both,
running the Pioneer gain at max and the SB at min, and vice-versa.

Are you running the turntable output into a Phono amp in the mixer? Be
sure the input switch for the mixer channel you are using is in the
Phono, not Line, position.

One you get the clipping problem under control, the frequency response
will probably be okay.

Only if the TT is already going through a phono amp. But you really
shouldn't have to do this. The output of the phono amp should be at line
level already.

Long shot: Maybe the input impedance of the phono amp is loading the
output of the cartridge.

I doubt it.

Re: Recording Mixes to Computer

First here what ya do.
Time out the song at 15 second intervals.
Next write the intervals on a piece of paper 1, 15, 30 ,45, 60, 75 etc......
in 5 or 6 columns
Set the input gain on the Computer to a setting and mark it for each of
those columns.

Then start the song and at each interval write on paper the gain on the
mixer in the column.
Each column represents your computer gain, down the column each mark
represents you mixer gain.
You will be recording the song fro each column.
Go back and listen to the song then when it sounds right look at the time
and the time on the sheet you wrote the settings on.

Done!

Re: Recording Mixes to Computer

there is a +5db gain switch in the software for themic input, but better
still the sb live has an line in (blue) this should solve most problems.

if it will not record from the line in directly set the record channel to
what-u-hear, a creative labs feature, this will allow it to process the
sound a little bit and then record it.

worth a try, it worked for me and another DJ i work with. finally what are
the specs of the pc you are using, and stop all anti virus software,
instant messanger and any other extra processes that are not needed at
that point
