Running amp without speakers

I have a Yamaha EMX 66M amplifier/mixer. I am trying to record some
mixtapes on my computer, and I need the mixer and digital effects that
are built into the amplifier, but not the speakers. I don't want the
speakers plugged in, because in order to get a strong enough signal on
the computer, I have to have the amplifier turned up higher than the
speakers can handle. But I've heard that, at least with older
amplifiers, you shouldn't run the amplifier when it's not connected to
the speakers. Is this still true for newer amplifiers?

What the? Are you putting the speaker output into the PC?

Use the monitor sends and leave your master turned down.

Re: Running amp without speakers

I own a EMX 68s.

And 2 soundcards. So I can if I want, play out of one S/card, through
the amp, then out using the REC outs, and into the other "recording" S/card.

The MASTER volume stays down low, so there's no sound coming out the
speakers. And no damage.
