Using sticky labels on records

I'm just hoping someone can enlighten me on the turntablist practice
of sticking labels on vinyl to mark sections of the record.

I really can't get my head round how this works. Are you supposed to
cue the record to where you want, and then stick the label behind the
stylus? Surely the labels are thicker than a single groove, so just
putting the stylus in front of the label wouldn't necessarily result
in it being where you want it. And won't the stylus hit the label on
the next rotation.

If there's a webpage that describes this, with illustrations, that
would be great.

This is new to me! Hard to imagine putting a sticky label right on the
tracks. However, it you put a little sticky label on the edge of the
record when it's cued up, that would mark the turntable position for the
cue.

Re: Using sticky labels on records

If you have a good local video store, rent the DVD of Scratch. On disc
2, there's a How To Rock a Party with Z-Trip feature where he
illustrates this.

Cheers for the tip. This film's actually on UK TV (Ch. 4) on Weds ,
but I've got a feeling the feature you're talking about won't be part
of the film

Re: Using sticky labels on records

The label doesn't go behind the stylus, I put thin strips horizontally on
the record (not over the track you want to play, either on the centre
piece or the next track which you're not gonna play), basically the label
lines up with the needle, so you know where the start of it is...

Confused? Hope not.
