Using the Mic

In the last few months i have started to play in a local disco bar. i play
trance(naturally), funky house, hard house etc but the gig does not require
me to use a mic as none of the other DJ's use one. i have also started to
do the warm up gigs in the local club for a DJ friend of mine. he says
that i have to start leanring to use the mic. i have watched him using the
mic but mostly all i can hear is a few muffled words and then "here we
fucking go" which gets repeated a pile of times during the nite. Can any of
u club DJ's give me an idea of the kinda things that u say. i know the
whole "here we go thing" adds to the atmosphere but is that all you really
have to do?????

Re: Using the Mic

That my friend is called bad technique.
What should happen is when you need to talk you should mute out your music
to a point where what you are saying is loud enough to be heard clearly.
I've watched DJs and KJs that just don't get it. My mic is always the
loudest of any sound ... first so I don't have to shout and when I do it can
be heard clearly over everything else including the music at full volume.
Second in case of a emergency I can make a announcement and it will be heard
no matter what.
I may do a intro to a song but at that point I don't have to raise my voice
as my mic is hot enough to pick up anything I have to say in a normal voice.
I don't need to strain to get it out.
The trick in short is to have your mute button set to drop the volume of the
music enough to be heard clearly then un-mute to bring the volume up. This
can also be done with your sliders to drop the music down and then fade back
up into the song. I preset my sliders using a piece of tape so I don't even
have to think about it I just slide them back up till they are against the
tape and I'm right back where I should be for volume.
One note we tried something at a large bar we work. The idea was how to get
everyones attention in case of a emergency and say we needed to clear the
room. We tried whistles, air horns (the portable kind for boats) and then
suddenly it dawned on us that we had the perfect noise maker and it always
got attention... FEEDBACK... yep just jam the slider up and cause it and
everyone immediately stops what they are doing and looks your way... never
fails... and if your annoucement is that important it's worth looking bad to
make sure everyone hears you....

Re: Using the Mic

Ditto all that.. do a short Radio course too... Its more than worth it. You
will sound ten times better than the untrained voices of guys that have been
working for years.

Re: Using the Mic

I agree with the last 2, although I don't think it's needed to go on a
radio course.Speak slowly.Try sticking a friend at the back somewhere
to tell you if you can be heard ok.Where are the clubs you are working
in ?.A good intro to the night would be :
Hi,welcome along. My names xxx.Any requests tonight do come up and
ask, especially that (at this point look for someone you fancy and
describe them like : ) girl in the white top and pixie boots who looks
stunning tonight.!". (make sure boyfriend of hers is not around)
As the first guy said - MOST IMPORTANT to turn the music down far
enough to be heard over the top.I do a radio show every morning on the
net.If you go to me web site - www.chrisreardon.co.uk and click on
the first picture of me in the white t-shirt, my most recent show will
play streaming through real player,or you can right click to save and
download it first. This will give you an idea of how far to turn the
music down.Radio though,is of course different from djing in a
club. They'd kill ya if you spoke as much as I do on me radio show !!
Let us all know how you get on.
Chris
