Vinyl Turntables or CD Turntables

Hi,

I used to DJ back in the early nineties on a pair of 1210s. I am trying to
get back into bedroom mixing for a hobby, and I am wondering what equipment
people are using these days? Someone mentioned to me that 1210s are old
hat, and that I should even conisder CD turntables. Can anyone offer some
advice?

Thanks a lot.

Nick.

REAL DJ's still use 1210's there is no doubt about it, and 99.9% of the
clubs will still have them.

Saying that, CD turntables are becoming quite popular, and you can do a lot
with them. You can even scratch as if you are scratching the record. Well
almost. it's not as good, or as mind blowing as when you do it on 1210's ,
nor will any REAL DJ give you any props for transforming by pressing the
"cue button", instead of using your two hands and a mixer. If you mix CD's
it;'s not you who is showing any skill or knowledge-it;s the machine, so
don;t expect appreciation for it. You also have to count on a sound delay
which seems very noticable still on most CD turns I heard so far, thus
making scratching even more difficult

I went to a club yesterday to hear one of my fav DJ's from the past. He was
a DMC runner, if not a Uk champ at some point. So in short he was good. I
watched him with disbelief when he unpacked and plugged in his CD
turntables. I though, oh well, perhaps he'll do something mind blowing with
it. He didn;t. In fact the best he managed to get out of them was a rare
BABY scrath! Pathetic really, we were so dissapointed, and reassured the
only way forward is still 1210.

If you are after learning or improving a SKILL, as well as a respect form
other DJs, you get the 1210's again. If you are after just basic mixing the
tunes, or are fed up with carrying the record bags(which I know I am) then
yeah go for CD ones. But perhaps wait a little. Technics is coming up with
CD turntables that will look similar to 1210's(certainly as big, and plate
almost as large, for a second I though it's some kind of a double turntable
as in CD and Vynil turntable in one-but wasn;t), I saw the prototype on this
years DMC championship. Obviously I cannot be sure how good it will be, but
I'm guessing it should do better then others.

Tech 1200-1210's are still THE STANDARD. In my opinion your CD decks are a
supplement, not the main dish

Re: Vinyl Turntables or CD Turntables

In addition to my previous post, I found the links of this new Technics that
should be out in May 2004 at the humble price(as if) of $1000 per deck!

The point is that they are Direct drive, (unlike other CD players), and
alike 1210's we all know and love. Here are some links with pics and
features:
