Vocal effects for dj-ing?

Hi,

I'm one of those skinny white guy dj's
who was born with a nasally, whiney voice.
And when I run it through a crappy mike,
it sounds even worse.

SOOOOOOOOOO....

I'm trying to spice up my club steez with
some vocal effects. Really, anything would
be cool, but if I could find something
robotic or whatever, that would be really
cool, ala Roger and Zapp. Does anybody have
any clues of things I could put inline with
my mic to get that going? Obviously, cheaper
is better.

THX, Jason.

A Guitar Effect Pedal. For a little reverb. Cheap and functional.

OR, go and do a media course and learn a little more about what your
supposed to sound like. Sure deep is great. But
good Modulation and Presence is better.

Re: Vocal effects for dj-ing?

Fiddle with the EQ your mic channel. EQ seems to work well. Try a little
bit of bass cut & mid boost. You might find you also need to cut back on
the highs. Should give a clean, crisp voice.

If you absolutely HAVE to go to effects, use a chorus, plate reverb
coupled up with a deep flange. The problem is most of these heavy duty
effects don't amplify well (ie: people can't understand the voice very
well), I also think that it makes them get pretty annoyed fairly
quickly. They also have a really nasty tendency to peak out excessively,
so I would advise running the whole lot through a compressor/limiter.

Anywayz, that's my two cents...hope it helps

Re: Vocal effects for dj-ing?

The classic DJs used a vocoder effects unit - a combo unit with
reverb, flange, phase, compression, etc. Think "California", "Push
it", "Needle to the Groove," etc. If you're handy with a soldering
iron you can even build your own vocoder. I think rack mount units
run around $150 - $200. They probably have a number for sale on Ebay.
If you have a laptop with Cubase (or any VST audio app) you can get
software vocoders for cheap with a VST effects package - or you can
just pirate the software with Limewire or Kazaa.
