wanted PC DJ software
Hi peeps - have just upgraded my PC (LX) to state of the art spec,
powerfull enough to run all the latest software, and would like to know what software people recommend for playing mp3s and putting a decent set together. Ideally, I'd like something I could use to play out with not having my own decks / mixer anymore... any help appreciated,, tnx, AL. |

Whatever you end up deciding on, three things you'll need to take into account: 1) You'll need a second soundcard for your headphones to cue with, 2) Your primary output card should *not* be a Creative product - look at something pro-level, like an M-Audio unit or a Santa Cruz card, and 3) Your MP3s will have to be ripped at 256k or better, otherwise the loss in quality will be *really* apparent on a big system. "Geoffrey" <goaEXCESSBAGGAGEbrains@hotmail.com> wrote in message Generally agree but.... "1) You'll need a second soundcard for your headphones to cue with" Or use a dual output card of good quality such as the Delta 44 and use an external mixer "2) Your primary output card should *not* be a Creative product" Definately agree nasty phasey things also avoid the urge to use the on-board sound (it is usable as an additional karaoke output ) 3) Your MP3s will have to be ripped at 256k or better, otherwise the loss in quality will be *really* apparent on a big system. Tend to disagree. 192 is fine for most but the really stubborn files and we play out on a 10k Court Acoustic System. Anything 'critical' rip at 256, but obscure/rarely used tracks 192 is fine. Some of our jingles sit at 128. Depends on the material concerned - use discretion. |

You will notice the difference between 128 and 192, but anything over 192 is overkill, I doubt you would notice any difference for 99% of tracks IMHO. -- Regards, Tony. I use Carl Cox's DJ Mixstation (an eJay product) because I only have one soundcard. You can fine-tune it beautifully, and you get a superb overlapping graphical representation of the waves of both MP3s so it doesn't matter that you can only hear one, you can still beatmatch to perfection. And if you listen to the songs beforehand you can make a note of roughly a good place to bring in the next song, and it will appear seamless when you crossfade. I have used dozens of MP3 DJing software and I have to say that although I think eJay software as a whole is a bit childish, the Carl Cox DJ Mixstation on eJay is genius. Where are you? In London? If so, I'm happy to show you how easy it is to use. |

Re: wanted PC DJ software
Traktor DJ Studio seems OK, having just downloaded it (cool demo) and
noodled for a couple of hours. Twin Dek (so far!?), Beat Matching, Realtime Loop stuff, Cues, Multi-Format Audio Files, Scratching, EQ, Lovely Pitch Control, Reverse, Top GUI and tune navigation, Easy to Use. As I have no manual - not all the buttons make sense. www.nativeinstruments.de I think. Soundcards with 4+ speakers can be set up so that the rear speakers can be used for the headphones. >2) Your primary output card should *not* be a Creative product - look at >something pro-level, like an M-Audio unit or a Santa Cruz card, and Old news. The Audigy 2 cards are easily good enough for DJ work. Take a look at the specs. The only major difference between pro cards and Audigy's is the lack of variety of recording rates using ASIO and the 48k limit for the effects engine, neither of which is really applicable for DJ work. >3) Your MP3s will have to be ripped at 256k or better, otherwise the >loss in quality will be *really* apparent on a big system. might be able to get away with a little less but yes, that's a good place to stop. Try Ableton Live. It's not DJ software but it's a hell of a lot easier to use than Traktor. Didn't actually see it (was too far back to notice) but a man in the know said DJ Surgeon used it (alongside Final Scratch) for the Werk Session at Plastic People. Re: wanted PC DJ software
yeah, traktor 2 kicks ass! you can also use a midicontroller to work with
it. Mixvibes 5 pro is a little bit less easy in use, but has tons more options (like playing up to 16 decks at once!!!) it also has great filters, eq's en effects.... If you're getting started creating mixes with MP3, MixMeister Express is the easiest thing of many I've seen. It lets you drag and drop songs into the playlist and beatmix them automatically with extremely good results. If you want a lot more control over everything then MM has a pro version with lots of serious bells and whistles as do many other mixer apps. |
