Where does the sub fit in?
Hello! Ok with the DJ equip set up.... I know I need turntables, mixer, amp and speakers etc but where does the sub fit into all this? There's no point in music if there's no heavy bass in it. Can anyone please help? Ruthy ;p |

One takes the output from my mixer, and feeds out to my subs. On that same amp, there are two 1/4-inch High Z outputs that feed out to the input of my other mixer, which then feed my normal speakers. With the crossover enabled on the first amp, only the lows feed into the subs. Using the High Z outputs to the second amp, the speakers get everything BUT the lows. If you had lows going to both the speakers and subs, IMHO it sounds like crap. Hope that helps, Will |

Re: Where does the sub fit in?
For many small gigs/parties you don't need a sub. Full range speakers will
give you enough for the room and small crowd. As the crowd increases they start absorbing bass faster than top end. So this is where the sub/s really helps out. Of course you are charging more now! That's a generalisation of the practicabilities of the industry. Not true audiophile however. If you wanted pure sound you wouldn't be using PA speakers- you would use Studio Monitors. But they wont handle the harsh environment of clubs, truck, smoke and drunk DJ's. Once we start talking about club systems and larger productions we have several choices of Sub-Systems. Powered/ Non-powered Subs with Passive or Active Crossover Systems. Powered Subs have built in amps.. While Non powered subs rely on a separate amplification. Active Crossovers are usually rack mounted units that allow tweaking of the system and are powered by house mains. Passive crossovers are merely a circuit board that separates the two frequencies (highs-Lows). After all that waffle. Don't rush out and buy a sub. Do a few small parties to get started and see what happens from there. However, when it comes to finally buying one, I would not recommend anything under 400 watts RMS. You need substantionally more power to develop good bottom end compared with minimal for good highs. You don't need a sub with Mackie SRM450's

They actually are not that great as far as bass goes. They'll work fine if you are playing popular music in a bar or at a wedding but are less than adequate for the kind of music you want to play. Oh sure they will work, but you won't be thrilled with the sound. I have played serious dance music on a pair of SRM450's, it was weak. Actually I don't really love the sound of them at all. But right now at your stage of the game you don't need to worry about big subs, amps, crossover, etc. These things are used when you bring your equipment out to throw parties etc. Then depending on what you want to do you can choose the size and type of speakers, amps etc. You're still just learning. Your first step is to play at home and learn to beatmatch and put a set together. Then, maybe you'll have some friends who are throwing parties or doing nights at small clubs let you play. For that, all you will need to bring usually are your records, headphones, and sometimes cartridges from your turntables. Maybe at some time you will want to bring your own turntables or mixer (eg turntables/mixer in the club are crap). Then finally when you get some experience you might want to own your own complete sound system. For now your most important purchases are your decks (turntables or cd players), mixer, and heaphones.. and cables to connect it all together. Yes, you will need speakers and an amp to play through at home. If you have a good home stereo that has good bass you can feel at least a little (that is, not some crappy home theatre system), you can play through that. That's what I do at home, I have a fairly expensive system I bought a long time ago and it still sounds really good. I have a bigger sound system but it's not used at home, only for real parties. If your stereo at home isn't powerful or lacks bass (or you just don't have one), your next best option is to invest in a pair of powered monitor speakers. For example the Fostex PM-2's are not bad at $500/pair including the amps (the amps are built in). They are a bit bigger than most powered monitors so you will get decent bass without a sub. You can add a cheap home-stereo sub later if you want it. You will never be sorry that you have good sounding monitor speakers waiting for you to play when you get home... -Ben |
